Gas Safe Engineer Ashford

Calum Long

Any work on a gas appliance or the gas pipework in your home has to be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. That is the law rather than a recommendation, and it applies to LPG as much as to mains gas. What matters just as much is what the registration covers, because each engineer is qualified for particular kinds of gas work, and the back of their ID card lists them.

That second point matters more in Ashford than in any other district we cover. Nearly one home in four in the Ashford borough is off the gas grid (24%), according to the government's 2024 figures, the highest of the 12 districts on this site. So plenty of homes here heat with LPG or oil, and the two are covered by different registrations. We are Gas Safe registered, covering LPG as well as natural gas, and OFTEC certified for oil, based in Bearsted, a straight run down the M20 to Ashford.

What counts as gas work

In a home it means installing, servicing or repairing a boiler, a gas hob or cooker, and the pipework that feeds them, whether the gas comes through a meter or from an LPG tank or bottles. Moving a gas pipe to make room for a new kitchen counts. So does disconnecting a cooker so a floor can be laid.

Plenty of jobs around a heating system are not gas work. Radiators, the water side of the pipework and general plumbing need a competent plumber rather than a Gas Safe registration, an oil boiler is OFTEC work, and the electrics belong to an electrician. Knowing which is which saves paying for the wrong visit.

How to check an engineer before they come

Start with the register. You can search the Gas Safe Register by business or by an engineer's licence number, and it shows the kinds of work each engineer is qualified to do. Ours is number 914673, and you are welcome to look it up before you book rather than after.

On the day, ask to see the ID card. The front tells you who they are. The back is the half worth reading, because it lists the appliances that engineer is qualified to work on, and reading both sides of the card takes about a minute. If an engineer cannot show a card, or the categories on it do not cover the job, the work should not start.

Four checks to make on a gas engineer, in order BEFORE YOU BOOK Four checks, in order 1 On the register Search by business or by licence number 2 The right categories They must cover the appliance you are booking 3 The right fuel LPG has its own categories, and oil is OFTEC work 4 The card on the day Read the back, which lists the work they may do Gas Safe registered is the start of the check, not the end of it

Ask about the fuel, not only the registration

In our experience, asking which fuels and appliances an engineer's registration covers works better than asking only whether they are Gas Safe, because registration is granted for particular kinds of work. HSE's guidance says the card tells you which appliances an engineer is qualified to work on, and LPG sits under its own categories rather than coming free with natural gas.

That is the question that matters across the borough. LPG is gas, so an LPG boiler needs a Gas Safe engineer with the LPG categories. Oil is not gas at all, and an oil boiler is OFTEC work. An engineer can hold one, the other or both. We hold both, so a house on a tank gets the same visit as one on the mains, and our LPG and oil boiler work covers installation, servicing and repairs. What changes when a home is off the grid is much the same anywhere in this part of Kent.

What Ashford's homes ask for

Ashford has grown quickly. More than a quarter of the borough's homes (27%) were built in 2000 or later, against 19% across the South East, according to the Valuation Office Agency, and large developments such as Chilmington Green are still adding to that. A newer home usually means a newer boiler, and manufacturer warranties generally ask for an annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer, so check the terms that came with yours and keep the record.

An annual boiler service with us is £90, and it is the visit that keeps that record unbroken.

Letting a home in Ashford

Just under one household in five in the borough rents privately (18%), according to the 2021 Census. If you are the landlord, the gas appliances and flues you provide need a gas safety check every year, and HSE is clear that the duties for LPG appliances are the same as for natural gas. Ours start from £120, and what the landlord check covers is worth knowing before you book.

Since October 2022 a privately rented home also needs a carbon monoxide alarm in any room used as living accommodation that has a fixed combustion appliance, gas cookers excepted, and the landlord has to repair or replace one that fails. For everybody else it is still worth having. HSE describes carbon monoxide as colourless, odourless and tasteless, and strongly recommends CO alarms as an early warning in any home, because your senses will not give you one.

If you smell gas

On mains gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before anybody else. That number is for mains gas, and it is free and answers around the clock.

On LPG, which matters in a borough with so many homes off the grid, the emergency line to ring is your supplier's, printed on the tank or the bottles and on your bill. Calor's emergency advice is a good model of what to do while you wait. Shut the emergency control valve outside the house, open doors and windows with the low ones first, and keep away from switches, phones and anything with a flame. Once the supply is safe, a Gas Safe engineer with the right categories finds and repairs the fault.

Hobs and cookers count too

A gas hob or cooker is gas work in exactly the same way a boiler is, and it is its own category on an engineer's registration. Ours covers cooking appliances as well as boilers, so connecting a new gas hob or moving a cooker point can be part of a kitchen plumbing job rather than a separate visit from somebody else.

When you book any gas visit, tell us the appliance, the fuel it runs on, whether that is mains gas, an LPG tank, LPG bottles or oil, the make and model if you know them, and roughly when it was last serviced. It is what lets us arrive with the right parts and the right paperwork, rather than finding out on the doorstep.

So, check the register, read the back of the card, and make sure the categories cover your appliance and your fuel, LPG included.
